FATAL RAILWAY ACCIDENT.

WELLINGTON, September 3. Harold Stantle, or Staiidall, about 45 years of age, understood to be a resident of Marton, who was found on the rail* way line at Wellington last evening, having been knocked down by a train, died in the- hospital this morning. At the inquest the. evidence showed that William Gadsby, of Hawera^ travelled with the deceased from Marton. Gadsby and another per&on left the deceased on the Thorndon platform and crossed the railway lines to feed som«( horses, one of them carrying a truss of hay. A train came along, and knocked 5 the hay out of the man's hands. It is supposed that Standall had followed the other men and was struck by the same train. Mr Sleejnan, the driver of the train, saad that the fireman told him to stop, as something was lying besids tha line. Mr Edlin, the fireman, said his attention was called to the rattle of ballast at the rear end of the engine. Tha light of the first carriage snowed th» form of a man lying beside the line. The coroner found that death was due ■ to the deceased coming in contact with a train godng in the opposite direction, . .neither the fireman nor the driver being

to blame. Captain Bollone, of th& Hinemoa, on hi« last trip to the Islands secured a larg« male sea lion for the Wellington Zoo. I* will replace the one which recently met its death by swallowing a hook concealed in a fish.
