Monday Evening. Mrs C. Butterworth and Mrs Stanley, Batchelor invited •& numbeT of guesta on Tuesday to a farewell afternoon at the Rink, which will shortly be closed now, as the days are growing warmer and outdoor forms of entertainment will be coming into vogue. All lady skaters were asked to attend mi "pierrotte" costume, eithei wealing white dresses with red pompoms or with black ones. A. very lp.rge number took par in the roller-skating, and the hall presented a very bright and' pretty appearance as the different ladies and gentlemen glided past in their gay costumes oi went through v-aricus pretty figures. The costume of a Pierrotte can be made becoming to one and' j all, the piqued hats, high ruffles, and pom- | poms presenting a Very charming effect. As each lady was dressed' so mucb alike, it is not necessary to comment upon the costumes. A band played a delightful variety i of the popular airs, and added greatly to ' the delight of those present. Music always hag eh arms, and those skating invariably soon fell into the rhythm of it. Spring flowers were very prettily arranged- in -vases on tlie , table. ; Mjss Stewart' gave a most successful bridgeparty on Friday evening at her brother's house in Heriot row. It was given in honour of Miss Olive Turtoa, and enabled numbers of her friend^ to see her before her departure for the north. Bridge was played in the smoking room, while in the dining roonj a moat delicious .supper had been prepared, the table being artistically arranged 1 with Christen as lilies and yellow primroses. Bathgate gave a most delightful tea party at her residence (Maryhill) as a farewell to Miss Olive Turton. Tea was served in the dining room, the tab!e looking very pretty, being decorated with violets and primroses and other spring flowers. After tea the guests were asked to find " cloves " which had been hidden in the dining room and drawing room. This caused great excitement, and keen inleTest war taken in seeking out the hidden seeds. Miss Jackson was lucky in finding the greatest number, and so won the prize. Music was indulged in in the drawing room, Miss Francis Tower singing delightfully several times, and Misa Brenda. Stock also played and sang in a charming manner. Last Monday evening, Mrs Eyre, Don street, entertained the members of the Ladies' Bridge dub, and other friends at bridge. * On Wednesday morning Mr Pram entertained the members of the Auckland representative hockey team at morning tea at her residence, Gladstone. In the afternoon of the same day a keenly-obntested match was played between the Auckland and! Southland rep. hockey teams, resulting in a win for the visitors by one goal. A large' gathering of spectators, amongst whom* were many -ladies-, watched the game with great interest. _ .Messrs . Meynell .and • Gunii's" company opened a short season of four nights in the Municipal Theatre on Wednesday, when " The Hypocrites" was staged, followed on Friday bj " Lucky Durham." These plays were produced by a very strong company, headed by the ever-popular Harcourt Beatty, who is well known to Invercargill playgoers. Unfortunately the patronage accorded by the public was not as large as the performances deserved. The weather, which was very wet and miserable, may hay contributed to the srparse attendance. Those, however, who braved the elements were amply compensated, for the entertainment provided was far above the ordinary. On Monday night the Savage Club held their annual 'Tjadies' Hours at the Art Gallery, which wae furnished and prettily decorated -for ~ the occasion. Th© large audience was very enthusiaetic, and enjoyed the very, varied and artistic entertainment provided for th-em. The. programme. Consisted of . orchestral ' selections 1 , songs, and amusing " talks," after which a delicious suppec was served, and 'the remainder of the evening ■was devoted to dancing. There is something much more fascinating about «. n-aval ball than the ordinary ballzoom ball -with the decorated halls and ceiling, and those who had the honour of -being present -at the one given -by -Captain and Mrs Colomb of the H.M.S. -Encounter last night had * most enjoyable time. Owing to. the recent heavy rain the decks of the warship .tee-re not fit for dancing on, .so the T7.S.S. Manraro* was turned to use for the occasion. The deck was - brilliantly illuminated .with electric lights, .*nd the sides closed in. with, flags. The musio was supplied by the' Encounter Band. Mrs Colomb wore a beautiful gown' of grey crepe-de-chin« trimmed with crystal embroideries. the far end of the room, where Colonel and Mrs Wolfe awaited them. Lady Plunket was wearing a handsome gown of tangerine satin, the skirt being made in tunic effect, and the corsage draped with rare lace and finished with a touch of black chiffon. Miss Hill, of the Government House party, was in whit: satin, made in the Princess style, the oorsage of which was finished with crimson, and gold galoa. Some of those present -were* Mrs C. D. Grey (Mayoress), in blue satin, made in the Empire style; Mrs George Bloomfield, pink satin charmeuse with draped tunic and insertions of jewelled pink and cream lace; Mrs Wolfe, •in yellow satin, with gold applique on the corsage; Mrs J. R. Reed .black crepe de chine over black satin, and finished with black jet and dark red poppies; Mrs F. E. Baume, black satin robe, with garniture of gold bugles; Mrs Alfred Nathan, grey satin, with tuni of grey chiffon; Mrs Savage, emerald green satin covered with green fUet net ; Miss Towle, pastel blue satin, with blue roses on corsage; Mi3s Marjorie Towle, glreen silk; Mrs Duthie. blue silk, with tunic bordered with silver braid and fringe ; Mis? Vera Duthie, simple white satin; and Mrr Ernest Bloomfield in blue satin veiled with silver sequined net, and bolero of silver embroidery. Monsieur Boeufre (French Consul) prosided over an unusually large gathering of members and their friends at the French Club last evening. Amongst -those present were the Governor and liady Plunket, who brought with them a large house par-iy. Mr Prickitt (United States Consul-general for New Zealand) and Mrs and Mies Prickitt were alao present. The first part of the programme consisted of t comedy, "Livre Trois, Cbapitre Premier," which in che capable hands of Mdlle Blanche Bouillon, Dr Bamford, and Mr Ferguson proved a great success. After Hi© nsual interval for refreshments (which were on this occasion provided bj Mrs Cole and Mrs Nolan), "Les Deux Sourds" was performed', the actors being Miss Commons. MessTs Bouillon, Balhaui, Wallace, and Woodward. The singing of "La Marseillaise" and "God save the King" brought a very pleasan* entertainment to a close.
