MR BRUCE'S PRIZE PROBLEM.
A .Jortnight ago we gave the game from which arose Problem 2609, . for a correction !of which Mr Bruce offered 10s. With the • gam* we gave the play received from solvers, ■ who* greed in making it a White win, in1 stead of upholding Mr jjruce's draw. The j play occupied so much space that we had I to wi tli hold Me Bruce' s own play. Here it ' is. f Position:— BLack : 3, 5, 6, 7, 9, 20, king 31. White: 14, 17, 18, 19, 25, 30, 32, king 4.. Black to play.
I (a) This is where the weakness lies in Mr [ Bruce's solution apparently. As shown by ' the play presented last week, 17 13 enables White to win.(b) 25 21 loses.— J. B. (c) This is a remarkable position, the like of which : I have never seen before. — J. B. Last week we received a telegram from Mr Bruce asking to submit for djudication in. play presented by solvers for a White win as against his draw. We have therefore consulted with Mr D. A. Brodie, who pronounces the position (Problem 2699) si White win, and the play submitted in this column recently correct. The first and most elaborate solution' sent in was by " Blue Bell " (Mr P. E. Hilliker, Dunedin), who-, therefore is entitled to the prize of 10s offered *5y Mr Bruce. ' Mr . Hilliker's play was' comprehensive, and showed some excellent points, and fine play. Mr Robert Boswell, Sockburn, Canterbury, was second. in"th? -field, and Mir W. Davis, Ahuriri Plat, followed, both giving good play for a win. The position, proved very interesting, and we have to thank Mr i Bruce for his share in it. \. < ?
