INVERCARGILL RECLAMATION.
THE GOVERNMENT'S OFFER. ■ (Fboii Ojjr Own Cobhespoxpent.) INVERCARGILL, August 27. To-night Mr J. A. Hanan, M.P. for InvercargHl,- -received the following telegram from the Attorney -general and Minister for Justice (Dr. Findlay) :— " The Cabinet approve* of the reclamation ' scheme in land from the Otaiara tramj way ; the corporation to give 650 acres ] and provide the plant, material, etc., and the Government to provide the labour , only. I am arranging with the district ' engineer to report as to the character of the works required, and if his report ' confirms the estimate tthe Government will carry out the work on the teims above stated." It will be seen from this message that the Cabinet has approved of the reclcimaI tion scheme for the Waihopai estuary so far as it effects tlie portion of the river north of the Otatara tramway. A . final report from the district engineer is ' asked for, but it is practically certain that this report will confirm the favourable opinion of the experts who have already visited the locality. It may be taken for granted that the work will be proceedied with. The town is asked to provide material and plant, and to give .tlie Government an area of 650 acres of the reclaimed ground. It return the Government -will find ajl the labour that is necessary, and the balance of the area reclaimed will become tlie property of the town. There is hardly likely to be any ddssaiisfaction with these terms. The committee appointed in connection with the proposal to collect historical records to deposit in Canterbury Museum is receiving a large number of pictures and documents. A collection will be handed over at an early date by the Old , Colonicts' Association. i
