HOOKEY.

LADIES' TOURNAMENT NAPIER, August 25. The weather was a^ain delightful today for the Ladies' Hookey Championship, and in the afternoon there were over 1000 spectators present. Wellington beat Wanganui by 2 goals to nil, Auckland beat Taranaki by 3 goals to 1, Hawke's Bay B beat Horowhenua by 2 goals to nil, Hawke'e Bay A beat Nelson by 4 goals to ndl, amd Wairarapa A beat Wairarapa B by 1 goal to nil. The positions of the teams at the end of to-day's play are as follow : — T , . , „ Wins. Losses. Draws. Hawke's Bay A 5 o o Nelson ... 4, i 0 ! Auckland 4 1 q I Hawke's Bay B 3 1 j j Taranaki 3 2 0 I W-airarapa A 2 2 1 i Wellington 2 3 0 j Htorowhamia 1 4. 0 Wairarapa B > ... 0 5 0 Wa.nga.nui 0 5 0 AUCKLAND v. SOUTHLAND. rru « INVERCARGILL, August 25. The first hockey match between Auckland and Southland was played here to-day, and i eSU r^? ln a wm for A "ckland by 2 goals to I- ■ & round ) vas somewhat heavy, and I this interfered with the more dashing style of the Auckland team. Southland put up a stubborn fight, and made the game very fast. Their play in the field was effective, but within the circle ability was sadly lacking, and they consequently failed to im- I prove opportunities which their more knowing opponents would have converted into scores. Some people say that the score was really 3 goals to 1, arid that the referee was deceived by reason of a hole in the net, which allowed the ball to go through. OTAGO v. SOUTHLAND. There were only a few spectators on Can^brook Ground on the 24th ult., when the match between hockey teams re- ' presenting Otago and Southland took place. 1 The teams were : — ( OxAGO.-7-Goal, Miss S. Mac Lean; full backs, Misses D. Lees and E. Whitehead; half backs— Misses M. Farra, D. Roberts, and A. Stratton ; forwards — Misses M Park, D. Gardner, F. Fisher, D. Glasgow' and J. Moore. j Southland* — Goal. Miss J. Cameron ; full backs. Misses F. Udy and L. Marsh - half backs— Misses D. Porter, C Marsh, and R. Noil; forwards— Misses J. Stevenson, A. Pilcher, J. Udy, M. Marsh, and J. Marsh. The game commenced with a sharp attack by Otago, Miss Fisher running in from | the twenty-five and shooting unsuccessfully. | Southland cleared, and Miss Jean Marsh, | and then Miss Pilcher wf-re unfortunate in \ missing opportunities. Otago's full backs j ! cleared, and the next play of note was a very clever passing rush by Misses Connie and Jean Marsh ; but Miss Mac Lean savod, and a moment later a shot by Miss J. Udy went wide. For a moment Otugo broke away, and Miss Glasgow and Miss Fisher shot in succession, but the ball missed the | net. Southland drove home another attack, Otago conceding a corner owing to Miss Whitehead playing behind her own line, but Miss Roberts saved. Otago as- ; sumed the offensive, and from scrambly play Miss Fisher sent in a slow ball, which beat the goalkeeper, and scored the first goal for the home team. Otago continued the attack, Mi.ss L. Marsh saving once, and then Miss Park had a shot at the net , from a favourable position, and missed. A ( moment later another opportunity was given her, and this time she scored. Southland rallied strongly, Misses Connie and Jean Marsh being particularly conspicuous in hard, defensive play, but despite the clever centres offered by the latter, and the clean, hard shots made by the former. ; Otag'o's goalkeeper (Miss Mac Lean) was j not to be painsaid. Just before half- 1 time Miss Connie Marsh appeared to lose one chance by hesitating- too long, and a | moment later a very neat shot from Mir* J. Ste\ensou's stick went just outside the net. The second sj^ll openo-d with Southland attacking. Mif* Jean Mai^h centred smartly and M:--3 Pilcher sent in a likely hall. * Miss Mac Lean saved, but only partially cleared, and Miss C. Marsh shot quickly* but missed the net. Then Otago worked the ball back up the field, and, after some pretty defensive play on the part of Misses F. Udy, L. Marsh, and R. Neill, the ball came out of a scramble to

Miss Fisher, who sent a beautiful shot right into the net. A moment later Miss Gardner (who played very safely throughout the game) sent Miss Fisher a neat pass, and again she found the net, but, on acooiint of off-side play, this score was dis- j allowed. Presently an opportunity was given Miss Gardner, but the goalkeeper (Miss Cameron) stopped the ball, and an- j other likely shot from Mifs Moore, who was playing an excellent game on the wing, went just outside the not. Then Miss Moore passed in to Miss Fisher, and the latter sent in a fast ball that glanced off the goalkeeper's stick and found the net- Thig proved to be Otago's last score. The game had by now lost much of its sting, and the Southland team showed some weariness. Yet it offered a sturdy defence to tfos determined assaults of the Otatfo representatives, who, with two clever and" resourceful players like Mus Park and Miss Roberts in the front iines, and a strong goalkeeper like Miss Mac Lean behind them, wer» no mean opponents. Southland stopped many dangerous shots, and conceded many corners, and then, in the last few minutes of the <spell. initiated j an attack. Miss Pilcher, Miss Stevenson, and Miss Porter found their way round Otaoro's wing, but. their shot could not pass" Miss ' Mac Lean. ' Then Otago turned defence into strenuous attack, and just before the whistle blew Miss Cameron stopped two snots sent in by Miss Fisher and" Miss Park. The final scores were: Otago- ■ 4 goals. Southland . Nil. Mr R. M. Strang, of Inveroargill, was referee. CANTERBURY v. SOUTH CANTERBURY. CHRISTCHURCH, August 29. The Canterbury ladies' team beat the South Canterbury ladies by 2 goals to nil. WANGANUI v SOUTH CANTERBURY. TIMARU, August 30. The representative hookey match, Wanganui v. §outh Canterbury, which was played in heavy rain, resulted in a win for Wanganui by 5 goals to nil.
