CRUELTY TO ANIMALS. ASHBURTON, August 27.
Severail cases of alleged cruelty to horses were heard before Mr Day, S.M., to-day. The police prosecuted in each case, Mr W. H. Zouch (Cliristchurch. infcpector for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals) being the chief witness. Fines were inflicted in every case, save one, as follows : — Stephen Ryaai, £5 ; Henry VesEfenekoe, £2 ; Alexander Knox Reddeclifle, £1 ; John M'Lauclilan, £2 — with costs against each' defendant. A charge agadn&t John Jo-hn-fetone of working horses while they wer« suffei-ing fax>m sores was dismissed, it having been shown by Mm that he had no knowledge of the condition of the animal**
