WELLINGTON. August 29. ' A large two-storey house in Kent terrace, occupied as a boarding-house by Mrs Waddell. was destroyed by five on Saturday e%-ening. The adjoining houce, which is next to the Kent Terrace Piesbyterian Church was ako damaged. August 30. ! A house in Kent terrace, owned by Dr Young, and occupied by several tenants, was gutted by fire. Indications were noticed an hour before the fire broke out, anoT search was made without avail. Afterwards the flames burst out under the staircase, and overran, the place aC once. Most of the occupants had little insurance, and are heavy losers, but the house was insured for £51000. j Yesterday an unoccupied building at i*etone belonging to the Railway Depa.t- I inent was burnt. It was valued at about £6000. CHRISTCHURCH, August 30. The Hon. W. Montgomery's house at Little River was destroyel by fire on ' Saturday afternoon. The fire originated in a shed at the back, and spread so quickly that it could not be stopped, and Jh,e main building was soon totally de-^

stroyed. It was a large structure of 13 rooms. Assistance was given to remove the contents, and some of the furniture was saved. Mr Montgomery, who is an invalid, was in the house at "the time, but was removed to his son's house adjoining. The house and furniture were partly covered by insurance in the Alliance, the former for £1000 and the latter for £350. The damage is considerably more than the insurance.
