LAKE WANAKA.
August 28.— We have been favoured with a splendid winter, and autumn-sown crops are very far advanced -for this time of year. Oate and wheat in some places are -standing a foot or more above the ground. Very little snow has fallen, there being at the ; present time a very small quantity on the ! surrounding mountains, and consequently j there will likely be a shortage of water vf • we have a dry summer i Lain/hs. — Some early lambs are seen in the paddocks, and appear to be doin# well, but it is early yet for this district, and it will b.i a few weeks before the general lambing commences Football.— The Wanafea football team has I feadi a fair share of matches this- -season, having played some nine game® with the neighbouring clubs. Some of these matches very interesting, and well worth watching, and although the Wanaka.. team ias; suffered defeat on five occasions, still they are to be congratulated or the fact that they always play a friendly game. On one occasion they travelled a distance of nearly ! 40 miles to play a match witß" Cromwell. j There are still two or three matches to ; take place, and we live in hope thar" our own boys may gain a victory every time. Social. — The Wanaka Presbyterian Ohurch annual social was held in the sehoolhouse on Wednesday last, the room being packed. j After the business of electing committees, ! etc., had been gone through musical items were rendered, and well received. The <ohoir opened with the anthem, "There's a shout from a host with banners." Mr , C. Nicholson sang "Love me and the world ; is mine" ; the ohoir, "Nature's Lullaby" ; 1 Mr J. Ross. "Where the ebb tide flows" ; ! Mr G. Pearce gave a recitation, "Gentleman I Jim" ; Messrs Chandler, Anderson, and Bovett gave as a trio, "Nothing but leaves" ; Mr T. Anderson sang "Sleep and forgat'" ; Mr J. Nicholson. "And a little child ■ shall lead them" ; Mr W. Bovett, "Beyond i the gates of Paradise" ; Mr C. Nicholson, 1 "Bather in heaven above" f and' the. choir, "Angel voices." Mr Sidey gave a humorous ■ and instructive talk on a variety of matters. Refreshments were then handed round and much appreciated by those present. The . chairman (Rev. Mr Chandler) gave a snort I address, and thanked all who had helped to make the social a success. The ohoir then sang the Benediction, which brought a very i enjoyable evening to a close. Miss Mur- ! docb, who accompanied the singers at the | organ, deserves special mention for the inI terest she took in the -social, and her splen- ■ did playing which helped to make the- . evening enjoyable. O» Friday evening the j choir are journeying to Hawea, _at which i place a similar social will held. Supposed Airship.— lt is generally believed I here that the phantom airship has paid us ! a visit, as several local people have seen ! "stars."
