PRESENTATION AT MATAKANUI.
On Tuesday evening last a large number *yf friends assembled in the schoolroom to say good-bye to Mr Jas. A. Jack and to present him with, a token of the esteem in which he is held by his many friends in tbe district of whicti he has been the respected teacher for nearly five years. Mr W. Laidlaw, chairman of the School Committee, presided, and In the name of the Presbyterian ChuTch made the presentation, wbicb took the form of a handsome Mosgiel rug In doing so he referred incidentally to the abilities of Me Jack as a teacher; tho great loss the district -would sustain through his promotion to Naseby; and in felicitous terms referred to the rug as being well fitted to keep frie feelings warm towanfe has old friends in Matakanui, who parted with him wrtii jg©nuine regret.— (Applause.) Rev. Thos. Knight, who was present, heartily endorsed ■the chairman's -remerks, "a«d-~afco spoke in* eulogistic terms of Mr Jack, .referring *o the exoeHenl eerrkes he bad, as. ■organist and in other ways* so cheerfully rendered the dflrroh, and suitably voiced the people s sentiments of gratitude therefor, as ateo their general esteem' for Mr Jack. t*e heartily assured him that their best wishes tawW follow . both Mrs Jack' and •to his new sphere of labour m the Hign School at Naseby.— (Applause.) Mr Jack, in feeling terms, expressed bis sincere thanks for the handsome and generous gift ther had so kindly presented nim-a gift which would ever remind him of bappy veare which he had spent in .Matakanui and of his many friends there.- Applause.) After a hearty vote of thanks to the chairman, on the motion of Mr Mitchell, ha* been carried by acclamation the mvresting function closed with the hymn "God be with you till we meet agaui. . On Friday afternoon the Matekanui School ohildTen, before bidding Mr Jack farewell, asked bis acceptance of a bandeome inkstand and fountoin pen, the former bsaring a K-rteWe inscription^ The presentation was made by Master Tom Donnelly, who in a few TvelUchosen sentences expressed the regret *hey all feH in parting with Mr Jack, and wisired ham everY future success.
