WRECK OF THE PENGUIN.
CLAIMS FOR COMPENSATION. WELLINGTON, August 30. The Arbitration Court had before it to-day a number of claims for compensation arising out of the wreck of the Penguin in February last. The claims generally were admitted, the only question being the amount of compensation. In the case of Albeit George Loo->emore, third officer, the Union Company agreed to pay £500 to the Public Trustee for the benefit of the widow. In the case of the claim of the parents and brother of Walter R*ntoul, engineer, Mr Justice Sim said that when the couit was properly constituted by the appointment of a successor to the late Mr S. Brown (the employers' lepresentative) it would probably make an order on the basis of £135 and costs. An order was made by consent for the payment ot £207 to the mother of Francis Drls-coll, second officer. The court stated that in t he case of the claim by the mother of ihe late Mrs Hope, stewardess, it was prepared to make an order for £72 compensation, if necessary. His Honor was informed that several claims had been settled out of court. The hearing of the other claims against the Union Company was adjourned till Thursday.
