Notes from Cromwell. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
CROMWELL, August 27. Steady rain last night put the river up considerably, but it turned to snow on the high country, so -there is not likely to be a big rise." It will interfere with the gorge dredges' working for a week. The Rise and Shine No. 1 dredge iat reported to be doing exceptionally well again, and the No. 2s returns will likely, soon be much improved, so the regular! dividends seem assured. I%e Keystone borer will put another bore down at the Kawarau Gorge befoiro moving to Bannockburn, as the syndicate expects to strike payable wash in the deep ground. It is likely that the Clutha Valley will also be prospected before the boieog leaves the district. . . . The Luggate Hydraulic Comrjany^ washed up for a fine return for a fortnight's work* and there is a splendid supply of watery Operations are now being commenced at Nevis, several parties having gone out tji« week. One of the hydraulic claims started a few weeks ago. Notes from Alexandra. (From Oub Own Coreespondeht.) ALEXANDRA, August 25. Stewart's Keystone borer arrived at tW$ Earnscleugh Company's claim last Friday, and started boring on Monday at * point opposite No. 5 dredge. So far good pjeg-
fpjtefes lias been made with the first bore, an 3 other portions of thfe claims will be prospected with this plant. A company is being formed locally wjth th« object of giving the old Bend i go pUini another trial with the Clyde dredge,' pnnoh was recently purchased by a local syndicate. Ifibk and party, on the Manulierilcia., are reported to be at present on a good run of wash. Last week's return is said (bo be well over the half-century It is understood that the Keystone borer operating in the Cromwell district succeeded in boring to a depth of 127 ft, when 4h« bottom was reached, this hole being 7ft deeper than any of the bores put down fit Naseby. I have the authority of Mr ftteel,. who is in charge of the machine, for saying- that no difficulty was experienced in drawing the casing Evidently this portion of Central Otago is more adapted for this borer than the Naseby district. . . MAY QUEEN. _ <Fbou Oub Own Correspondent.) AUCKLAND, August 24. Shares in the 'day Queen Sold Mining Company dropped to 5s 9d this morning, the result of rumours that the piston rod at .the Queen of Beauty shaft had broken. During the morning the most was made of this . rumour, and as long as three months' cessation of pumping was prophesied by some, who probably were interested in seeing shares go lower. The secretary of the Thames Drainage Board promptly telegraphed to the pumping engineer, and rtceived the following, satisfactory reply shortly after 1 o'clock :— '• Pump bucket rod brbkaa. Piston rod all right. Hope to start pumping again some time to-night." The Star's Thames correspondent says: — "There was a slight accident to the pumping gear "at the May Queen, but it has not turned out as serious as was anticipated. One of the steel bucket rods broke last evening, but it was quickly got out and sent to Messrs Price Bros., and has since been returned fit for wcrk. It was thought probable the bucket would be jammed, but just before lunch it was released. It will be examined, after which the rod will be coupled and pumping resumed. The water rose quickly in the shaft, but otherwise no inconvenience was caused." ROSS GOLDFIELDS. (Fftou Oub Own Corbesfohdent.) " GREYMOUTH, August 24. On Wednesday. September 8, the pretty littlo Borough of Ross will be en fete, the occasion being toe formal opening of the Ross goldfields claim. An express tram is being arranged for from town, stopping at Hokitika for a few minutes, and it is likely there will be a large number of visitors to inspect the interesting work undertaken by the company. It is understood that the Mont DOr claim will Also be- in full operation, sluicing with the giant noezles on, -to that visitors who may not. have seen gold sluicing in the most modern form may have an opportunity of wl * ncss " ing what practical miners have, with the ■aid of water, accomplished. The Hon. James M'Gowan, M.L.C., will formally open -the "Ross "goldfields claim. August 30. It is understood that a meeting of the directors of the Ross Goldfields was held OH Thursday evening, at which the resignation of Mr Wyllie, mine manager, was withdrawn. Some rearrangement of the -official staff was also made. Mr H. M. Smythe resigning the position of mining -engineer, and being appointed consulting engineer. Mr Smythe will likewise continue, the secretarial duties. NEW ALPINE MINE. (Fbou Ottb Own Coheespondent.) GREYMOUTH, August 24. The New Alpine mine manager reports for the week ending August 17 as follows : *' During the week No. 14 level was extended by hand labour and rock drill 12ft. making a total distance to the north of 142 ft. The reef has narrowed a good deal, «nd we now have toth walls with sft of reef between. The reef is bearing off towards the east, and is better looking. The atone and values have improved steadily in the stopes A good deal of mullocking .and logging up passes has been done. The trtpne in No. 8 stope is 10ft to 12ft in width, and ib all good payable ore. In "No. 7 stope going south there is 10ft of leef of fair quality. This stope 13 now 31ft south of the middle winze, and is still going strong. In the other stopes the reef remains unchanged. Ninety ton 3 have been delivered at the battery for the week. August 26. . The mine manager reports for the week -endei August 24 as" follows:—" During the week. No. 14 level was extended 7ft 6in north, making the total distance north of the crosscut 148 ft 6in. • This is exoeption■AHy poor work, and must be accounted for by the-Toek drill working very poorly. The reef is hard, and there is only about balf the- required pressure to drill the stone with. Two different stoppages occurred— one 'through the high pressure nozzle becoming blocked, and the other through a email breakage in the machine. 1 have altered the intake at the high pres«ure to make it almost a<n impossibility for a block to occur again. The reef in ■the etopes remains a good size, but the foest stone is coming from No. 8 stops. The areof is broken in the stope, and is slower -to handle than if it was all clean stone. "We have started to rise for No. 9 stone, and tibere is about 6ft of mullock between -the hanging wall and footwall spliced. We nave not broken down stone yet, so do not know the size, but indications point to a f«ir width of reef. One hundred and six ions of stone were paddooked for the ■week, making a total tonnage of 196 tone. ...oil GRAND JUNCTION MINE. WAIHI, August 26. As the result of an underground survey conducted at the Grand Junction mine in connection with the locality of the Martha lode at No. 5 level, the north crosscut is to be resumed immediately. The survej has shown the Martha lode ahead of the present face, consequently the lode previously cut through, showing a width of- 40ft, and which was considered to be the Martha lode, must be a stranger. NEW MAY QUEEN. By exchangee to hand on the 29th we learn that the directors of the May Queen have determined to soli the Moanataia. l portion of the mm* 1 to a corauany for £JO,QOO. The shareholders of the May Queen will have the fiist option over the snares, which are to be ofierpil at 3d on application and 3d on allotment. As the prospects of the Moanataiari portion of the mine have improved by tlio gold obtained by the Waictahi in the branch
J leader 6ft No. 4 level, it Is probable that the shares 'in the new company will be readily taken up. Not content with cutting out the Moanataiari section, the directors have arranged to sell the St. Hippo section of the May Queen, together with the Vanguard mine, for the sum of £2000. I The shares in the new company will, in the first instance, be offered to the present shareholders in the May Queen at, it- is said, Id on application and Id on allotment. The fact that the Shortland Flat Company is about t? commence operations in the Deep Sinker shaft will benefit this new company and enable work to be commenced at once on the St. Hippo reef. Then the shaft commenced by Mr Crawford for the Vanguard in the Karaka Creek will also be utilised for working the eastern section of the mine. The action of the -May Queen Company is to be commended, for it will c .iable the mines to be thoroughly proved, and afford employment for many miners. DREDGING RETURN!..
