The, Hanover Street Baptist Literary . and Debating Society, organised competitions ii> \ impromptu speech, impromptu debate, anJ ) dramatic- recitation, which took place- on', Aug. 30. The audience, which quite filled the hall, wa3 entertained for two hours and* ' a-half by the dramatic performances of ivoiters and trip witicisms of the speakers.. Air J. W. Smith, pf the Dunedin Competitions Sucietv, acted as judge and chose the subjects. The results were as follow : — Impromptu Delate. Subject: ''Is it' Desirable* to Establish a Chair of Domestic Economy at the Ota». v o University ?" — Mr A Mazeng'arb and Miss Ivy Mazengarfc. 177 points, 1; Mr D Sutherland and Mr G. Pnterson. 174 points. 2; Mr D. Mac<lon»ld and Mr R M/Pheivon. i 72 points. 3» Three other pairs competed. The judse remarked that first place was gained ij.v Miss MazentriirK's speech, nhicti w».» well rendered arid given with feeling and 1 accuracy. . - t Dramatic "Recital ion —Mr O C'Mnzfingarb, I ; Miss K.
