FLOODS IN VICTORIA
MELBOURNE, August 25. The river at Jeparit (248 miles northwest of Melbourne) is still rising. About 50 persons are homeless. The town of Beulah (240£ miles northwest) ie isolated, and the inhabitants have constructed embankments to keep the water out of the town. The greater part of Kerang (179 miles north-north-west of Melbourne) is under water, owing to the levels breaking. August 27. With reference to the proffered help from Sir Prodyot Kumar Tagore, the State Premier (Mr Murray), while fully appreciating the kindly spirit of the offer, said; that the State required no such h«lp. The damage by the floods at Horsham is estimated at £5000. Cottages are inundated to the extent of sft, and the furniture has been ruined. Many house!: have been dangerously undermined. LONDON, August 25. Sir Prodyot Coomor Tagore lias tele* graphed to Captain Collins, the Commonwealth Representativie, his sympathy with." the sufferers by the Victorian floods, and offers to raise a subscription if acceptable. Dr Gertrude Keith, a London physician with a large practice, is enthusiastic on the subject of medicine as a profession for women. " There are now approximately 400 women doctors in England," she said to an interviewer recently, " and there is still room for many more, especially ia hospitals and in provincial to.wns.
