POLAR EXPLORATION

PERSISTENT MISFORTUNE. LONDON, August 22. A start was made with Mr Walter Wellman's projected, balloon - voyage from Spitsbergen to the North Pole, but it was attended with ill-luck. After quitting Spitsbergen the hoseshiped bag containing the provisions, attached to the balloon .guide-tope, and used as an etpiiKbrator, burst, -and compelled a return. The trip is relinquished for the present year, as the balloon is also seriously damaged. The party had' covered only 32 miles before the accident happened.
