THE OTAGO-SOUTHLAND RIFLE TEAM.

THE CITIZENS' MOVEMENT. An appeal is now being made to the public for financial support for the proposal to send a riH| team from Otago and Southland to Sydney to compete at the National Rifle Association's jubilee prize meeting, which will be held at Randwick from October 8 to 19. The design underlying the project is sufficiently explained in the follow'ng extract fro'n a circular which the Mayor, as chairman of the public meeting ibtt affirmed the _ desirability of sending the team, has issued : — It has been ascertained that a first-class team can make the trip, and one that fully justifies our sending it, not only to <ry conclusions with the best shots in Australia, but to gain the experience in shootin? that wUI enable them to impart, their ideas to riflemen throughout Otago and Southland, an.i thus assist in bringing our Volunteers up to the highest state of efficiency in the most important and practical course in their syllabus 'of train- . ing. The difficulty, of course, is the matter of funds. For sending- a team of eight men a sum of about £200 will be required. , So far no very active steps have been taken to raise tho amount that is required to defray the expenses of tho team, but it is important that the promoters of the undertaking should have the finance of the trip assured by an early date, since the entries for the meeting 1 close in the first wook in September. The movement is one that is being warmly advocated by the most prominent Volunteer authorities in the district, and it is hoped that those v.-ho are in sympathy with thf> project will forward their subscriptions without delay to the treasurer (6 Graham street, Dunedin), ilip secretary (Roy 440, Dunedin), or some othoi member of the committee.
