TARANAKI OILFIELD.
ENCOURAGING SIGNS. ' NEW PLYAiuuTH, August 17. Developments on the Taranaki Company's oilfield at Moturoa are very encouraging. The company is testing the lower levels, with No. 3 bore, and this morning, at a depth of 2678 ft (fully 400 ft lower than previous bores), a blow-out occurred. An enormous pressure of gas was blowing out of the bore all day, and the manager (Mr Simpson), by the use^ of a pump, lias obtained a- fair quantity* of petrol&um of apparently very fine quality. The well at present seems amost free from water. The position is interest-, ing, as showing that the assumption was wrong that no oil could be obtained at a greater depth than Between 2200 and 2300 ft. Further reports are being awaited with interest. Conditions at No. 2 bore, where a steady yield of 15 barrels a day has been, procured for some weeks, and the experiments with the view of increasing the 15 barrels daily now being carried out are equally satisfactory.
