Iron in Disease.
If iron is taken it should be after meals, i j for it is found that it is more completely ■ assimilated an.d .taken into the blood whilst • digestion ft in active progress. Certain pre- J parations of iron te"nd to produce ".onetipa- 3 tion, whilst the tincture of iron, itcelf a v valuable preparation, exercises an injurious ' action on tho teeth, and it should therefore " always be taken, with water through a tube - so as to avoid contact with the teeth. Again, *: it may. be' noted that certain iron prepa-ra- jj tions, taken foi the cure of anaemia in the , form of pills) are apt fo pass undigested * through the bowels. It is therefore a far . more appropriate treatment to administer r iron in a fluid state. Preparation? of iron ■ which do not - constipate and which 2 are pleasant to .take are known, as dialysed iron, the dose of which changes from 10 to 15 drops 'after meals twice or thrice daily; ~ \ and the aromatic -tincture of iron of Afchenstaedt, this last being an extremely pleasant i preparation to take, and one now largely prescribed by physicians. In the case of I anaemic females iron may be pleasantly administered in combination with aloes, the
tendency to constipation whoh is a marked feature of anaemia being thus avoided. A very excellent mixture which acts as a tonic in cases of anemia, and aids, in fact, a cure where good food and fresh air are also supplied, is that composed of equal parts, say 2oz eaoa, of compound iron mixture and compound decoction of aloee. A dessertspoogful of this taken with i little water night and morning regularly forms an extremely excellent mixture in caeee of the kind referred to.
