(a) 30 26, 10 15, 16 12, 7 11, 14 10, 18 22, 25 18, 15 31, 21 14, drawn. (b) Forms Problem 4 in Dunne'* Praxis. This is a -weak move, giving the position away. It is improved on by 27 31 as at note (a) in solution to Problem 2701 in this column : —

Solution to Problem 2701 (By F. E. Hilliker, Duncdin).— Black : £ 10, 20, 22. White: 21, 30, kings 2, 4.

This position occurred during analysis of Mr Bruoe's Problem 2699, and arises at j fourth move of Var. 4 in solution of that j problem published last week. The solver found it 9 very tough proposition.

W. wins. ! (a) Position now the same as in game above by J. Cowie at note (b), where 27 23 is played, and White ge.ts the man on 30 through at once. If after 27 31, 30 25 ia played, then 19 23 draws for Black— « move the strength of which has evidently been overlooked by llf Cowie. (b) Thesr formations necessary to safely bring the man through from 1 square 30, and are the pivots of tbje position. Var 1.— 31 27. 22 25, W. wins. Var. 2.— 19 23, 22 17, W. wins. (Var. 3.)

Var. 4.— 19 23, 22 25. W. wins Var. 5.— 31 27. 10 14, 19 24, 21 17, 24 19, 18 13. 19 10, W. wins. Var. 6.— 31 27, 2 17, 19 23, 17 14, 23 19,

14 9, 19 23, 10 14, 23 19, W. wins.

Two solutions were received to the afbove — one from " New Chum," and the other from "J. B." Both, however, rely on the Cowie position, and play 27 23, which is improved upon by the foregoing play The leal crux of the problem occurs after 27 31 • s played. " Xew Chum's" play is very gcod, and some original variation* are given; at 26th move of his trunk, however, 23 19 forces play into his own var. (a), at 28th move, at which stag* 27 31 should be- played instead of 27 23. This last remark applies to "J. 13. 's " solution also.
