ADDINGTON WORKSHOPS.

PROJECTED IMPROVEMEXTS: - WELLINGTON, August 23. The— Hon. J. A. Millar, Minister of Railways, made a statement to a New Zealand" Times representative ac to the decisions arrived at as the result of the recent Addington Workshops inquiry. The commission having reported that considerable waste occurred owing to the presence of many overworked independent boilere, it is intended to do away with steam boilers and install a gas proj ducer plant.* Instead of going in for the expensive system suggested by the commission of electrifying all the cranes, it ifi proposed to provide them with small motors, and take power from the Tramway Board. As to the aiTangement of the shops, the Minister does -not propose to make much alteration. Some of the machines wili be moved to points at which they can be more economically •worked, but it is not intended to separate the repair work from the manufacturing. To , equip a separate manufacturing establish-

ment -would cost £250,000— an expenditure which would not be justified. It would noi be economical to run separate repair and manufacturing shops, because at certaifl times there Is a rush of repair work, and at other times the works can be employed in manufacturing. There is not sufficient manufacturing to keep a large workshop going. With regard to future work for the Government shops, the Minister said ho was prepared to let contracts for 10 class A engines, to be privately built, if the cost did not compare unfavourably with the department's estimate. Twenty engines, which were also required, would be built in the Government shops.

After a. long search a will in which Mr Patrick Monahan, of Boston, disposed of £60,000, has h&>n found fastened to the bottom of a. washtub. • A correspondent of the Fiji Times writes from Tailevu that the natives of that province have handed to the Government for lease 50,000 acres of land, including some splendid fertile flats. Tailevu is on© of the best localities of the Fiji group.
