NEW ZEALAND SECURES PREMIER
POSITION. FIRST DAY. BRISBANE, August 18. The Australasian amateur athletic carnivals commenced to-day. The weather was showery, and the ground heavy, but the attendance was good. The championship events were contested by the representatives of five States. The results were as follow : — THREE-MILE CHAMPIONSHIP. World's amateur record, 14min 24sec, by S. M/ Dickson (Canterbury) . ... 1 .Blake (Victoria) 2 Suftren (Victoria) 3 Among t<he other starters were Richardson and Sproule (Victoria), Lynch and Fitzsiromo.ns (Now South Wales), and M'Knig-ht and Moore (New Zealand). A good start, was effected. Dickson, M 'Knight, Blake, and Suffren took charge at the start, and at the end of a mile and a-hr,if Dickson was leading, the others being spread out. Dickson. who ran strongly throughout, won ea-sily by 150 yards; Suft'ren being 50 away, third. Time, 15min 21 4-ssec. Diekson and Blake secured standard time certificates.
