CANTERBURY v. SOUTHLAND.
OHRISTCHURCH, August 22. The match Canterbury v. Southland was pl*yed at Sydenham Park yesterday afternoon before an attendance of about 1200. The ground was in good order, and the game was very fast. From the bully-off Canterbury set up an attack. Ford centred well, but GaJtaraith returned. The Southland forwards got up a good passing rush, but Ackroyd found the line about half way. The Canterbury forward* got away, Featheretone taking the ball weN into the circle, but Bannerman saved twice in quick succession. Eventually Gafbraith returned, anil Urem and [Wails followed up fast, Bowden having to concede a corner. Southland continued to press, but were penalised for offside play. The ball was returned to Southland territory, but Ford hit over the line. Cali lender and Lewis were prominent in a rash, but Anderson intercepted, and the ball was returned 1 to the Southland circle, where Anderson found the net. Ckllender, Lewis, and Hartley got on a good passing ru&h, and Wall had a futile •hot. Play was again taken to the Southland twenty -five, but Galbraith relieved. Give-and-take play followed until Featheretone got into the Southland circle, but Saxtnermaai stopped two very hot shots. Ding\ all, who was playing an excellent game, relieved. After tie interval Southland set up an art/tack, the ball passing back and forward rapidly. Bowden returned up the left wing, where Browning made a brilliant rush up the line, taking tho L*U right into the circle. Porter eventually hit the ball up the line to Lewis and Callender. Ackroyd obstructed, and from the free hit the bail went into the circle, the White forwards losing a good opportunity by being too slow. The ball mub taken back into the Southland circle, end Bannerman saved some very hot shots. After some up-and-down play Featheretone shot an excellent goal. From the bullyoff the ball was again taken to the Southland circle, Featheretone again being successful. Southland seemed to be exerting themselves to score, but Aokroyd hit well vp field, where Free shot Canterbury's fourth goal. Throp was next noticeable for some good play. Canterbury again 6 e* up an attack, and eventually Throp scored. Hartley, Uren, and Wall then Get up a good rush, but Luxtoa kicked* to the line. Shortly after thie, time was called, the (fame ending — Canterbury _ ... ... 5 goal** Southland _ Nil.
