ASSISTANCE FOR THE EMPLOYEES.
ACTION BY LABOUR UNIONS.
(Fsoic Ova. Own Cobbespondent.)
GREYMOUTH, August 23. In connection with the trouble at Otira a special meeting of the General Labourers' Union was held on the Coal Creek extension works yesterday afternoon. Mr R. Semple, president" of the Miners' Federation, attended, and explained the action that he aixl others had taken to try to settle the dispute between the .men and the contractors r which up to the present had been unsuccessful. The action of the police authorities in sending constables to the district was harshly commented on, it being considered illtimed and unnecessary. The meeting having fully discussed the matter, it was unanimously resolved — " That this union offers its sympathy with the men who have been locked out by Messrs M'Lean and Sons, and the members pledge themselves to contribute Is per man per week during such lockout." Members of the State Collieries Miners' Union have agreed to levy themselves for a similar amount.
