FIRES.
AUCKLAND, August 22.' A house in Richardson street, Mount Albert, owned and occupied by a builder named Orr, was totally destroyed by fire last night. It is not known how the outbreak occurred. The building was insured for .£4OO. WELLINGTON, August 17. Roma Bay House, a private house, containing about 16 rooms, erected in one of the marine suburbs five years ago, was totally destroyed by fire this morning. The building was insured in the Norwich Union office for £1500, and the contents in the Australian Alliance for £670.

There have been several small fires this week. A house owned by Alexander Gibson :at Te Arai was destroyed. It warn insured in the Victoria office for £175. Thomas's store and dwelling at Patutahi were burned the same night ; insurance*, £110 in the State office and £450. in the Commercial Union. A house owned by the Sievwright Estate and occupied by Mr Pilcher was the next to go, and was insured for £150 in the State office and £125 in the Sun ; followed last night by a- house owned fay the Kerekere Estate and occupied by Maoris, and insured for £500 in the Guardian office.
NAPIEIt, August 21. M'Leod and Co.'s fellmongery on Awatoto road was totally, destroyed by fire last night. Beyond the borough boundary no water supply is available, and the flames rapidly ate up the building and contents; Insurances : On the building, £440, in the New Zealand ; on the plant, £300, in the Norwich Union. The contents — wool, skins, and pelts — were covered by an open policy in the Australian Alliance, but fortunately for the company a heavy shipment was sent away last week, and the loss,' therefore, is not heavy.
WELLINGTON, August 20. A 10-roomed house in Lome street, owned by Mi E. G. Jellicoe- (now in England, and occupied by several tenants, was damaged by fire early' this morning. Insurances : On the building, £1100 in i-he Koyal ; on the furniture, £255 in the Ocean and £200 in the United. One occupant, Mrs Margaret Mihoy, severely injured her leg through jumping from ant upstairs window when, escape by the stairs was cut off. A member of the fire brigade was injured by coming into contact with a broken electric wire, but his-, injuries are not serious. •
