WATERSIDE WORKERS.
.CONFERENCE AT WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, August 17. The Waterside Workers' Conference ' was continued to-day. A motion was passed urging the Government to take over the. Lyttelton- Wellington ferry ser- ! vice. A motion was also passed urging the Government to make better provision ■ for the inspection of ships' gear, and that all ' chain gear be inspected and stamped at least every six months. The delegates urged the Government to re-enact clause 5 of the original Arbitration Act, allowing two employers or seven workers to form an employers* or workers' union respectively. The • | last amendment to the act increased the I number to three and 15 respectively. Another resolution affirmed the principle of crib time, and that workers should be paid their wages in the em-, ployere' time. August 13. The Waterside Workers' Conference carried a resolution having for its object Ihe obtainng of a uniform award. The ■ fo'lowing resolutions were also passed : " That steps be taken to secure that the power of discharging men be. limited to the foreman in charge of a job." "That the , employers be asked to agree to a ! standard of adequate sleeping accbmmodai tion to be provided for men on outporfc ! work." " That steps be taken to check i the men in the Itolds making slings in • excess of the weights provided under the i awards." "That a claim be made- tor equal overtime rates of pay for all men* encased in outport work." The Waterside Workers' Conference • affirmed the principle of the nationalisaI tion of land as the only solution of | labour economic troubles ; also urging . that each port should provide its own labourers to work vessels. , August 21. I The Conference of Waterside Workers [ resumed to-day. In reference to the incident that took place yesterday, the i chairman announced that he had been ! asked if he would receive a deputation from the Wellington ' Union. The depu« tation, however, was not officially appointed, and could not be leceived. A resolution was carried by nine votes to five protesting against the medical test' being applied to workers "prior to entering into employment. It was agreed that the Waterside- ' Federation should establish a political fighting fund, along with Trade* and! Labour Councils, for the purpose of defraying the expenses of Labour candw dates at local and general election?. A motion was passed protesting against the flour duty.
