OTAGO ART SOCIETY.
The annual report to members is in the following terms:— "The council is pleased to report that the society continues to make steady progress. The annual exhibition was again very successful, and 465 pictures were shown. A portion of one of the rooms was devoted to the Photographic Society's exhibition, and this proved very attractive. The- sales amounted -to £225 19s 3d, including an art union of £111 ss. The attendance of the public was unfortunately not so large as usual, and only £63 I*3 4d was taken at the door; this was probably due to the parliamentary elections being held in November. The money realised from the sale of • catalogues was, however, more than last year. Three pictures were -bought during the year, at a ccet of £90 9s lid— a' miniature by Rochord, and two water-colour landscapes — one by W. Stacey, and one by J Caddenhead, A R.S.A. These have been hung in the Public Art Gallery with the other pictures belonging to the society. The prizes offered by the council "for competition throughout New Zealand were awarded as follows :— Still Life Study, Miss Gyles, Wellington ; Landscape Study, Mr Pattle, Christchurch ; Study of a Head from Life, Miss Howell, Christchurch, and Mies Finch, Dunedin. The medals presented to the Boys' and Girls' High Schools were won by T, H Denuiston and Marjorie G. Dumsday." The balance sheet shows the receipts to have been (including a balance forward, £59 13s lid), £459 11s 3d. The principal itom6 were: — Members' subscriptions. — honorary £32 6s, working £55 2a od; admission to exhibition, £63 14s 4d ; catalogues, £21 11s 4d ; art union, £111 ss ; pictures sold, £135 17s; commission on sales, £12 2s 6d. There is a balance in hand of £17 10s lOd. The principal items of expenditure were: — Rent, £30; lighting, £9 8s sd; hanging pictures, £11 15s 9d; advertising, £13; printing, £18; artists' pictures bought by public, £225 19s 3d; medals, £2 10s; competition prizes, £8 8s; purchase of miniature, £10; picture, "The Last Gleam," £27 ; " Autumn in the Valley," £53 9s lid. The assets consist of P'ctui€s (£1340), outstanding subscriptions (£3O), amount on deposit (£100), and bank balance (£l7 ICe). The liabilities are nil.
