THE FLOODED FIELDS IN THE NORTH ISLAND ON THE ROUTE OF THE MAIN TRUNK RAILWAY. The land between Shannon and Tokomaru, a distance cf seven miles on each side of the railway line, was entirely covered with water after the recent heavy rainfall. The cost of draining the land is estimated at ±7000. This result would be attained by shortening the Manawatu River at this point, thus carrying away all the surplus water. A large tract of land in Wellington province, distant only a dozen miles from Palmerston Xorth, would thus be secure fio n flood and availalble for cultivation. — E. Denton, photo.
