MORVEN.
; August 14. — Those interested in fruitgrowing had a \ery interesting afternoon at Mr E. Stokes's orchard on Wednesday, when Mr W. Y. Couitier, the Government export, gave a lecture on pruning the dif- j fei - ent kinds of trees, and also on the latest methods of dealing with the various pests. 1 His remarks were listened to with great interest, and many questions were asked at different times, and were ably answered by ' Mr Courtier, who speaks in a very deliberj ate and unassuming manner, so dear to the ' heart of the farmer. At tho conclusion of j the lecture Mr E. Meredith proposed hearty votes of thanks to Mr Courtier for his able 1 address, and to Mr E. Stokes for placinghis orchard a' their disposal. Among thoss who attended the lecture were some of the senior boys from the Morven School, under the charge of Mr Clarke. Working Bee. — A very successful working bee was held at the local tennis coui-t on Thursday, when Mr W. Arnott brought a plough and scoop, and Messrs Nelson, • M'Aleer, Marshall (2), Ancell, Clarke, Huston, and Blaii% with a formidable array of spados, shovels, etc., put in a very useful afternoon's work levelling the grounds and removing the bank, which wa& too close to tho playing ground. Much appreciated j afternoon tea ivas provided by Mrs R. B. ' Clarke. It is intended to open the season ; at an early date, and the committee is '. \ anxious to get the grounds as neat as pos- j sible for opening day, ]
' Bachelors' Ball. — The Benedicts' ball pro mises to be a great success, and with Mi G. Marshall as secretary things are bounc to go with a bang. I saw one of th« invitation cards, and it is very neat. A strong committee is working very hard and it is backing up the secretary in good style. Deer. — A local farmer tells me that hi; son saw a stag with a good show of antlei in one of his paddocks early one morning about a month ago. The stag hopped over a couple of fences with the greatest ease, and made -for the hills. He says there was no mistaking it, because it was quite daylight. Star-gazing. — The apparent proximity oi Venus and Jupiter on Thursday attracted some considerable attention, but as no one here has seen the airship, no one seriously considered that the two lights were connected. v Piogres3. — The building trade appears tc be brisk at jMorven at present, as the Anglican Church and a new residence are boti in course of erection.
