Football. — The fourth Cup match between the Queenstown and Arrow teams was played on the latter's ground on Wednesday last Queenstown. was only abfei to put 10 men in the field, but managed to hold their own in the first spell, scoring 1 five points to their opponents nil. In the second spell Arrow scored, nine, and secured a win by 9to 5. Arrow therefore wins the Cup with three wins to Queenstown's one.

General. — At tie Southland Hospital and Charitable Aid Board meeting, held in Inyercargill on Thursday, it -was decided to inform Dr Valentine that the board yrould be prepared to accompany, him to the liofcee District in tho fourth week io. Deaths. — A very sudden cbath took place at Arrowtown on Wednesday morning hat, when Miss Florrie Jones, eldest daughter of Mr Edward Jones, passed away. A» late as the previous Monday evening- the deceased young lady took part in the Arrow Glee Club's practice, and although her heaj'bh had been indiffeven>i> for some time it was never anticipated, even by her nearest friends, tbat*hexe -was any cause for- alarm, or that death was at hand. The immediate cause of death was heart trouble. Deceased was of a quiet, amiable disposition, and the news of her^-sudder death came a? a shock to her many acquaintances, and, general sympathy prevails for Mr and Mrs Jones and family in their sad affliction. Her age was 20 years. The funeral took place at Ar.rowtown this afternoon, a very large numbei of friends attending. The Rev. H. Packe, assisted by the Rev. H. Blathwu.yt, conducted the Ibturial service. A very old and respected resident of Gibbston, in the person of Mrs Reid, wife of Mr David Reid, passed away there to-day. Deceased had been in failing- health for some time, and the end was not unexpected. She was a racfet ■ kindly and) ohexitablo lady, and held in the highest esteem by all who had the pleasure of her acquaintance. The late Mr, Reid ie survived by her husband and one son and a daughter (Mrs S Hunter, of Pembroke).

Personal. — At the last meeting of the Southland Education Board it was resolved — "That the resignation of Mr James Orr as head master of the Arrow District High. School be accepted as from January, 1910, and that Mr Orr be assured of the board'shigh, appreciation of his long and faiihtul service as a teaofoex. Miss E. Romans, 'daughter of Mr G-. BL Romans, Arrowtown, has been appointed mistress of the Wallacetown School. Miss Romane'e many friends will be pleased to bear of her advancement in the teach ing profession. MjaHstieiial Visit. — The Hon. RTM'Kenzio and party arrayed in Queenetown on. Sunday last at midday. In the afternoon. Messrs J. Edgar (mayor) and M. J. Gavin (councillor) met th.9 minister and extended him a formal welcome to Queenstown. Beyomd this nothing furthea was done. The party were afterwards escorted round tho park by Mr W. Fraser, M.P. Mr M'Kensje expressed himself as being delighted with the appearance of the grounds. He also told tfte mayor that he was impressed with the cleanliness of the town. The party; left Queenstown on Monday morning for Inveroargiil.

Accident. — Last week I omitted to> chronicle a rather aexious accident that betel Mr Robert Harrison, who* was formerly a well-known oeeid-ent of Skipper's district, but is now living ckt Arrow .River. Hewas on his way home from Arrowtown, when he accidentally foil over an embankment on the Macetown road. He broke his leg badly near the knee, besides receiving injuries to his ankles. He was ab once taken to the Arrow Hospital, where lie is progressing as- well as can be expected. As Mr Harrison is an old man recovery will be necessarily slow. In the sixties "Bob" Harrison \v;as a well-known, athlete, and old residents still maintain that he was the. best man at his particular branches of sport that lias ever been in fcnedistrict. It is said what he could do T2ft in a standing flat jump after coming out of his claim, in bis ordinary working attire. He .could also jump 36ft in three 'broad jumps, and over Jjft in a standinghigh jump. ,
