INVERCARGILL COMPETITIONS.
(Feom Otm Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, August 15. The Invercargill Competitions Society opened its yearly session on Friday afternoon, and judging from present indications the fifth festival will probably be more successful than ita predecessors. One class of competition the absence of which is to be regretted is that for choir-singing, but it is hoped that a competitive drawingroom entertainment, which replaces it, will pro\e an adequate substitute. The judging of this item (on Wednesday evening) will bo by ballot of the audience. Ihe results .=o far are: — Pianoforte Solo (over 10 and under lo years), " Causerie."— Master G. W. Except where otherwise noted the competitors are from Invercargill.
According to the official report the derailment of a train on the Caledonian railway near Crawford on April 2 was due to the breaking' of a arank axle which had run 145,389 miles. The fracture had probably been growing for some time. Mr Leadley told a farmers' meeting at Ashburton that 28 New Zealanders had purchased properties in Queensland, that an agent was now here eaideavpuring to induce more to go.
