BURGLARIES IN AUCKLAND.

(FaoM Ouh Own Cokkespondent.) 1 AUCKLAND, August 11. Burglaries in Auckland are becoming rather serious, five city stores and offices having been boldly "entered during as many days. The last case is that of Messrs John Reid and Co., merchants, Fort street, whose store is situated near the printing office of Messrs Abel Dykes and Co., apparently on Monday evening. Having- been disappointed with the result of their attempt to dynamite the safe of the latter firm, the cracksmen proceeded > to the roof of Messrs Reid's premises, removing a small skylight or trapdoor on j the Fort street frontage, and descended | to the .ground floor, where they broke their way into the front office. There they found that the film's valuables were kept in four iron eafes. They commenced operations on the largest ones, and removed t c he cover to the keyhole, but, finding an inner slide in the keyhole which prevented the insertion of the dynamite, it is presumed that they reserved their enetgks for another occasion. They broke ojx-n sundry packages, and helped themselves lo chocolates, --ai dines, and cij*arettt% taking their departme with nothing more. The police have been informed, and in the meantime it is stated that a Vigilance Committee of city merchants will make the object of defence a very warm one-
