RETRENCHMENT AND THE MARRIED MEN.

(From Our Own Cobbesponj>ent.)' WELLINGTON, August 16.

When the retrenchment scheme was started several- weeks ago a number of men in various departments were told that they would be transferred to other departments. On going to these departments, however, the heads informed them that they knew nothing aoout the supposed transfers. The men t therefore remained in their old departments, and came to the conclusion that they would remain in the service. A # number of these officers were to-daj surprised i<>, get word of their dismissal at short notice. As in the interval they have taken no steps to get other employment, the sudden dismissal after being told" that t they would be transferred cornea very' hard ' upon them- In one or twodepartments married men with families received notice of dismissal, while others with no one dependent upon them havebeen kept on. £ome of the cases are* particularly hafd, and it is understood they will be reconsidered by Cabinet at an early date. Sir Joseph Ward, . beforehe left, was particularly interested in seeing that these married men should beprovided for, and Cabinet will no doubt agree to their reinstatement.
