COMPARATIVE DREDGING RETURNS.
The following table shows the number of Otago and fouthland dredges at work weekly with th-eir returns, together with the figures for the corresponding periods of 1908, ISO 7, and 1906. Pennyweights and grains ar« omitted in each instance: —
DREDGING RETURNS. During the past week 25 Otago and Southland dredges have reported returns amounting to 6340z 3dwt, or an average of over 250z 7dwt. Two West Coast returns total 440z 19dwt.
DUNEDIN STOCK EXCHANGE
The experiment of ha.ing a third sitting of the Exchange at midday was started last Wednesday, and so far has been found to serve a most useful purpose in bringing members (together rr.ove frequently, and generally facilitating business intercourse. Attention at the extra sitting has been devoted chiefly to Auckland stocks, but. a,ny other stocks are dealt with it desired.
Business has been fairly steady both in investments and in quartz during the past week. Investment shares generally have shown a slight firming tendency. Bank of New Zealands are wanted at £9 3s without sellers. Buyers of National Insurances quoted as high as £1 9s, and sellers have been offering at £1 9s 3d. Standard Insurances changed hands at £1 3s 6d, and are now quoted at buyers £1 3s 3d, without sellers. On Thursday Westport Coals were offered at £6 15s, and yesterday there were buyers at £6 13d. Westport-Stocktons were to be had at 7s 9d, but met with no demand. Buyers- of preference issue D.l.C.'s have advanced to £1 2s, and National Mortgages are on offer at £3. Donaghy's Ropes arc wanted at £1, but there are no declaiccl
sellers. Large issue Milburn Limes are in 1 demand at £1 6s 6d, with sellers holding ! for Is more. Bujors are offering 13s 3d for the small issue, the latest selling quote being 14s. [Sixpence divides buyer and seller of New Zealand Drugs, which dosed en Friday at £2 6s 6d— £2 7s for buyer and seller respectively. New Zealand Papers were inquired for at the improved price of £1 2s on Fi'day morning, and sellers were en th-3 market at £1 2s 6d at the late call. On Tuesday business was repelled in Union Steams at £1 14s l£d, and they were offered at £1 14s 6d on Friday without drawing buyers. Business in Auckland quartz shares has been brisk, and several stocks — particularly Waihi Grand Junctions — have shown considerable fluctuation. Spot sales have been recorded at from £2 14s down to £2 12s 6d on Wednesday, and forward delivery business at from £2 14s (six weeks) on Wednesday to £2 16s (eight weeks) the following day. So far as can be ascertained here, the first section of the Martha reef has evidently been driven through, and the crosscut is now being continued through ande3ite towards the back section. On Friday Junctions closed with buyers at £2 12s 6d and sellers at £2 13s 6d. Talismans have shown a marked decline, and have been dealt in at £2 17s 3d. The best buying offer for tliom on Fiklay was £2 16s 6d at the ' morning call, and the best selling offer £2 17s 6dat midday: May Queens continue firm, and a good many -lots have been sold ,at from -6s 3d to 6s sd. A parcel to be delivered in six weeks' time was disposed of on Friday morning' at 6s Bd. Pride of Wwhis have increased in value, and sales were reported on Wednesday at Is 3d, and yesterday at Is sd. More were wanted at Is 4d. with sellers at Is 6d. The latest quotes for Tairua Broken Hills are — Buyers 3s Id. sellers 3s 3d. Waihis were offered yesterday afternoon at £9 9s 6d, and buyers advanced to £9 Bs. Waihi Consolidateds have been sold at' 5s 6d and 5s 5d during the week, and are now quoted at 5s Id — 5s 6d. Waihi Extendeds brought 7s lOd on Monday, but rose suddenly on Friday, when they were purchased at 8s 3d at the midday call, there ,being a further demand at Id less. In the afternoon, however, they had eased, a little, and changed hands at •8s Id, with more wanted at that price. Waiotahis were sold on Thursday at 7s 2d, but on Friday morning business waa done in them at from 7s 4d to 7s 6d. They also wsre weaker in the afternoon, and closed with buyers at 7s 3d and sellers at 7s 4d. A buying otfer of Is was made for Eurekas at the last call on Friday, but sellers keep to 3s.- Barewoods closed with buyers at 13s 3d and sellers at 15s.
Electrics are* weak, and were offered at 4s 9d, with no -buyer offering more than 3s 9d. Hartleys, which were bought at £1 3s last Saturday, declined to a guinea, on On. Friday morning 9s was offered foi 25 9d without buyers. - Golden' Treasures found a purchaser last Saturday at £1 12s 6d. Yesterday morning 9s was offered for 25 Manuherikias. and a parcel of 50 was on the market at the same price, but the difference in the size of the lots was a bar to business. Buyers of Molyneux HydraHlics have advanced to 3s,- but there are aone of these shares offering. Sellers of Rise and Shines are prepared to quit, at £1 13s 6d, and Rising Suns are wanted at £1 12s 6d. For Sailor's Bend 6s is offered, but' holders want 7s 9d On Friday morning there^ were sellers of Stanley Paracales '• at £1 0s 6d, but buyers would not go above 18s. Roxburgh Amalgamateds were wanted at 6s 3d, and the contributing issue were offered yesterday at the same figure. The opendnur of the week, "as is 'more or less usually the case, heralded a slight easing about the market generally "Waihi Grand Junctions dropped a shade. A sale was effected in them on 'Qhan,ge at 53s 9d, x <and at the close of the day for further lobs N on offer at the eaime figure the best bid made was 52s 6d. Waihi6 have firmed 1 fully 2s dorinig the last few days, there being sellers at £9 12s at the" last callover and no buyers. May Queens were a shade easier. They 'have contributed a good Heal of business of late, and, on Moni day furnished a transaction at 6s 3d. A parcel ;of Wai'hi Extendeds changed hands at 8s 1 3d in the morning. They eased to the' i exrfcenit of Id at troiddsCy, but firmed later to buyers 8s 4d, sellers 8s sd. In commercial i stocks Bank of New Zealand scrip disclosed a firming tendency.
