The position of wheat in South Canterbury is very strong, stocks being in, small compass for this time of the year,_ -aid in very few hands. More general inquiry i© being made, and the market is so" sensitive that 4s 9d would have to be paid fo any considerable quantity, in spite of the weaker reports from the London market, it being well recognised that quite sufficient, if net toe much, wheat has been allowed to go out of th*» Dominion. Fowl-wheat is beirtg s>c.'d at 4s 2d f.0.b., sacks included. Seconds are wcrth up to 4s, f.0.b.. packs in-,, acc-oiding to quality. For oats the market is rather quieter now tha.t the Tongariro has completed loading. This steamer took a considerable quantity away from Timaru. Stocks are small, and there are very few offering-"? from farmers. Values may be act down at Is lOd to Is lid for Cartons and Dun*, and Is 8d to Is 9di for Danish, f.0.b., -e.cks in. A few sales of barley have bw<n made it from 3«- f.0.b.. downwards. Thri* is a considerable variety in quality, and discoloured lots are somewhat nesrleoted at from 2s 3d to 2s 6d. The marked for potatoes is quiet, but there is a rather firmer tone in view of the reports from Australia, and it will not be at all surprising to see the market advance rapidly.
