LIEUTENANT SHACKLETON

LONDON, August 8. Lieutenant Shackleton will lecture in the United States and Canada. Mr Taft and Earl Grey are members of the Reception Committee. Record fees are guaranteed. Lieutenant Shackleton, when interviewed, said that the proceeds of the lectures were already mortgaged. He explained that a group of Englishmen who had promised him assistance for his late expedition withdrew at the last moment owing to the American financial crisis. He then raised £20,000 upon his personal guarantees. The contributions from Australia and New Zealand were used to secure additional s-tores and scientific equipment. He hopes by the proceeds from his book and lectures and by personal subscriptions to repay £10,000 by the due date (July, 1910).
