At the monthly meeting of the WaitaHuna Farmers' Club the secretary submitted a report on various detail matters cf local importance. He intimated that no reply ihad been received from the I<awrenco Borough Council concerning the proposal to establish telephonic communication between Dunedin, Lawrence, and Waitahuna. It was decided to communicate with the Farmers' Co-operative Association about re-leasing the club's paddock. The secretary was instructed to wr'.te to the railway traffic manager about the bad state of the approach to the siding at Johnston's station. Mr R. M'Cbrkindale, the president, expressed a hope that there would be a large rally a r the annual meeting at the end of August, and hoped many farmers would attend-, although they wjere not members. , - TheTuapeka Times reports: — Lambs nave made their appearance in several parts of the district, and the fine, mild weather lately experienced has givcD them an excellent start. At a mooting of the directors of theSouthland A. and P. Association it was decided to change the dat-o of tha horse parade from Saturday, 2nd, to Thursday, 7th October, and to introduce the 6y=tern of judging and giving prizes instead of simply parading the horses as has been the way hitherto. There will be two classes in each of the sections— draughts,
thoroughbreds, and carriage horses — one for horses four years and upwards, and the other for three-year-olds. It is anticipated that there will be a. lwg-e entry both of imported and of locally-bred stallions. It was also decided to adopt the latest system of judging breeding draughts at the summer show — that of having three judges, two of -whom judge, while the t&ird stands out and acts as umpire in the event of the other two failing to agree. The first to act as umpire is decided by ballot, and -the other? act in turn. Two judges will be employed in the working classes. The annual report and balance sheet were read and adopted for presentation to the general meeting of members, which will be held on Saturday, August 28. At a meeting of the committee of the Gore A. and P. Association it was resolved to erect a new fence on the* {railway side of the ground, and ask the Railway Department to contribute towards the cost. The following nominations for office-bearers were received: — President. Mr S. White; vice-presidents, Messrs R. Fortune, W. Sooullar, and S. G. Inder; committee — Messrs" J. A. Aitken, J. Clcusfon, T. He-ron, C. Cooper, T. Telfer, S. G. Inder, R. Dodds, D. Dun, L. McDowell, J. Gumming, J. Scott, A. H. Sim, D. Y. Dickie, M. Fortune, and Jas. Stevenson; treasurer, Mr W. Macara: auditors, Messrs J. M. Wise and Geo. Brett. Of the 400 improved farm settlements which are to be opened shortly, one hundred are situated in the Wellington province, 120 in Taranaki, and 150 in Auckland.
