COAL MINERS' UNION.

FEDERATION ALMOST COMPLETE. (Fboic Ouk Own Cohbesponotnt.) GREYMOUTH, August 3. Mr Robert Sample (president of the New Zealand Miners' federation) returned on Saturday night after a very successful trip to Otago, where he ipduced . all th» ooal miners unions to join the federation. There is now only one small union — thatat Stockton, in the Buller dietrict-^which remains outside the federation, but Mr Semple' is hopeful that, as the result of a visit, at the end of this week this union I will join, thus completing the federation ! of the miners' unions throughout New ! Zealand. Mr Semple states that unemployment is causing a good deal of distrea* down south. The Ka-itangata correspondent of th« Free Press says: — "It will be remembered : that three months ago the executive of the, Otago Coalminers* Union in Kaitangata, received notice from about 90 of the Green I Island members of the union that they were going to withdraw from the union ' and play a ' lone hand.' This notice expired on Saturday, but it would seem the | defaulters have to a certan extent regretted , the step, no doubt recognising that as far ,' as the union is concerned Kaitangata. is the: 1 ' hen that lays the golden egg.' Two delegates from Green Island— Messrs W. Hol- ! lows and A. Love— came to Kaitangata on : the 30th, and met the executive in conference on Friday and Saturday. What ac'tu- ■ ally transpired at these deliberations is not stated, but it is understood that the dele- ' gates 'swallowed the leek,' and signed the j document withdrawing their resignations before the time had actually expired. Th© position- of the other* is somewhat different; the time has expired, and it is no* . clear whether they can be taken back on ' the old footing, or whether they will bo 1 required to join afresh and pay the entrance fee."
