UNIVERSITY COUNCIL.
The ordinary monthly meeting of the University Council was held on Monday afternoon, and was attend^sd by the Vicechancellor (Mr James Allen, M.P.), Dr Hocken, Dr Scott, Dr Shand, Professor Hewitson, Rev. A. Cameron, Dr Church. Mr T. X Sidey., M.P., Mr L. Harris, and Mr D. Stewart. The Vice-chancellor briefly welcomed Dr Church and the Rev. A. Cameron, the newly-re-elected members of the council, back to the table. The gentlemen named briefly returned thanks. REPORTS. Th© School of Mines Committee recommended that the titles of the professors in the Mining School, as given in the terms of their appointment, be adhered to — mamely, J. A. Park, Professor of Mining and director of the Sohool of Mines; P. Marshall, Professor of Geology and Mineralogy; and D. B. Waters; Professor of Metallurgy and Assayings The committee instructed the architect to complete sundry works on the. Mining School building at an estimated cost of £66 6s, by day labour if thought fit. — Adopted. The Finance Qommittee reported that the income paid into the general account since last meeting was £249 10s 6d, and the expenditure was £1318 13s 2d. — Adopted. The, bank pass book showed a credit balance on July 26 of £2055 5s 3d, less outstanding cheques £960 13s fid, leaving a net credit balance of £1094 lls 6d. — Approved. j • COBBE3PONDENCE. ! Professor D. R. White, chairman of the ' election meeting of graduates, held on Saturday, reported that the Rev. Andrew Cameron and Dr Robert Church had been re-elected members of the University Council. — Reoeivod. Mr T. E. Taylor, M.P., wrote asking whether the position of Principal of the Chair of Domestic Science would be advertised in Britain, and what salary would be attached to the position. — Council not in a position af present to furnish the information desired - The Acting Uuder-Becretary of the Mines Department wrote that the Minister regretted that he could not see hie way to amend the scholarship regulations in the direction mdicoted by the council. He ; would be pleased when in Dunedin to rej ceive a deputation from the council on the 1 matter.— A -deputation to be arranged for. j The District Railway Traffic Manager advised that authority had been received to issue school boarders' tickets to bona-fide students, not following- any employment, on presentation of certificate, — Received. The Secretary lor Education wrote acknowledging receipt of the council's application for an additional - grant of £400 for the Dental School building, and informing the council that the Government regretted that it was unable to see its way ' to grant the request. — Received. The Professorial Board forwarded the following resolution, which had been adopted on the motion of Professor Pickerill: — "That all advertisements in the public press concerning olwsses held in this University should be signed by the registrar, after approval by the Professorial Board, or by one of the h acuities ; and that a copy of this resolution, be sent to the council with a request that it be endorsed." — Approved of.
