Mon3ay Evening. - During the past week the H.M.S- Encounter visited Port Chalmers. In honour of the occasion Sir James Mills, the president of the Otago Navy League, gave a splendid' ball to Captain Colomb and his officers. It •was held in the Early Settlers' Hall, and! everything had been done for the enjoyment of those present. The hall was beautifully decorated with axt muslin, and the stage where the musicians were stationed was quite ' a bower of greenery. Altogether, the scene j was a very brilliant spectacle. Most of the ' chaperones enjefyed the 'cpmfort of the many lounge seats provided. The supper was laid in the -committee rooni, the lajge and small tables being gaily -fleooiated wtfch~*deffodilß and birch leaves presented a most axiiistic effect. Sir James Mills received his guests at the entrance to the ballroom, and was very ably assisted by Mrs Aufrere Fenwick, who is the secretary to the Otago Ladies' Navy League. Mrs Cadell (Geraldine) is staying in Dunedin at present. 1 A quiet, but very pretty, wedding was cele- ! brated at St. Matthew's Church at. 10 o'clock on Saturday morning, only the immediate relations of the bride and bridegroom being present. The" contracting parties were iKes Ethel Hazlett, .eldest daughter of Me James Hazl-ett, of Cunedin, and Mr Donald Malheson, of New South Wales. The Bey. W. Curzon-Siggera officiated. The bridesmaids were , Miss Hilda Hazlett (sister) and Miss Agnes Hazlett (niece of the bride), while Mr Farquhar Mathescn, brother of the bridegroom:, acted as best man. The bride wore a very smart white cloth dress, made vesry simply, and toque of pink and cerise roses. She carried a beautiful bouquet of roses end freesias. Miss Hilda. Hazlett, senior bridesmaid, wore a -pale helio.trope- coat and skirt, the coat trimmed with strappings, cf heliotrope silk and black buttons, an exceedingly pretty hat of pink and heliotrope flowers. Miss Agnes Hazlett, the other bridesmaid, wore pretty little white silk frock and white crinoline hat. Both carried horse-shoes of pink geraniums. Mrs Hazlett' (mother of the bride) wore a handsome black silk braided net da-ess over black glace, the lace yoke embroidered with heliotrope, black hat with heliotrope flowers; Mrs W. After the ceremony the ha.ppy couple left by the express train for the north, en route to Sydney, which is to be their future home, amidst many congratulations and- the inevitable showers of confetti. The bride's travelling dress" was a navy 'blue coat and skirt, braided, and brown hat. In the afternoon Mrs Hazlett entertained a number of friends to afternoon tea at her residence, High street. About 70 were present. The hostess received her guests in the drawing room, which was very prettily decorated with spring flowers. The table in th© dining room was charmingly set out with white narcissi and white flowers. A band; was stationed upstairs, and played' a number of selections, while a fortune-teller was kept busy during "the afternoon. Among the guests were Mrs W. Brodrick, Kelvin road, was the hostess for the Ladies' Bridge Club. Mrs Dimlop, Yarrow street, gave a bridge evening on Tuesday. On Thursday afternoon members of the Ladies' Golf Club played the first round of the competition for the trophy presented by Mr J. Cunningham, Mrs Barclay (handicap 13) winning with a net score of 81, Mrs A. E. Smith (handicap 30) being second with a net score of 92. Mrs Barclay's score of 46 and 43 respectively- is a ladies' record score for these .links. On Thursday evening Mrs Cruickshank, Gala street, gave a small bridge party. On Friday evening the Musical Union, under the able eonductorship of Mr Chas. Gray, gave an excellent concert in the Municipal Theatre. A large and appreciative audience greeted the performers, and a most enoyable programme was provided. The voual soloists wer" Mr? L. Cheyne, who has a charming soprano voice (two bracketed numbers, "X Lament" and "Happy Song," very sweetly) and Mr Xorruan Churton, who Ejave a veiy aitistic rendering of "I hear you calling me." This gentleman, who has a \ery fir.o baritone voice, and is a great favourite with Invercargill audiences, is leaving shortly for Australia to obtain further muaifiil training. At the close of the performanco Mr F. J. Lilhcrap, who has been for many years a valued member of the society, and v ho is retiring from active service in the orchestra, was presented by the members of the society with a handsome oak and silver tray as a mark of esteem. Hunt Club's annual ball, held after the races, was, as usual, most enjoyable, everything going off well. The music wa3 good, and the floor in excellent order for dancing. The supper was" given by the. ladies, and! was most delicious. The rooms were decorated with the club's colours (crimson and green). ' It is with great regret -we learn that Mr R. C. Tennant and his family are leaving Timaru for Inveroargill. Mr Tennant has been manager cf the Bank of New South Wales for many years, and while congratulating him on his promotion, everyone is sorry to lose him and his family, as they have taken a foremost part in the sporta and social life in this town. The Garrison ball was a Brilliant success on Thursday evening. The ballroom was beautifully decorated, and the committee had worked 1 hard to make everything perfect, and are to ba congratulated on the result. August 9. Much interest was taken by golfers in ant electric match for Miss Mendelson's trophy, and two very pleasant days were spent on the Highfzeld Links. Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs Hunter-Weston and Miss Mendelson. The winner was. Miss .Ashwell, with Miss Ruby Scaly second and Mrs Mannering third. Miss Ashwell, a young ybegirmer, is a most promising player, 'her driving being specially good and her style excellent. The medal match for July . was won by Miss Mendelson. The final for the championship of the Hagley •Ladies' Golf Club was played on Thurday, and resulted in a win for Miss Cowlishaw, Miss Preston being "runner-up." Last Friday evening the spinsters of MarlT)orough held their ball in St. Patrick's Hall, which proved in every way one of the most successful and enjoyable ever held in the town of Blenheim. Everything was just as i<t should be — a floor, excellent musio (supplied by Quartley's Band) for lovers of dancing, a lovely moonlight night for those who were in a frivolous turn of mind, and cardrooin and! billiard! table for non-dancers, and, last, but ndfc least, a tasty, tempting, acdi appetising supper for those who relish toothsome delicacies. The supper was arranged on three tables, each decorated with pretty spring flowers and bowls of violets, with the necessary foliage to give the desired effect. The ballroom itself looked really pretty, it being decorated with palms and ferae, strands of lyoopodium intermingled with Chinese lanterns, and camelias, which gave the room a very striking appearance. The secretary and committee deserve every praise fo rthe creditable manner in which they performed their duties as hostesses, and for the excellent way in which they carried out all arrangements, never forgetting on© little detail. Everybody seemed in excellent spirits, and I need h»rdlj add they found much difficulty in drawing the dance to a «!os4 even at a very early hour on the following morning, for nobody seemed at all <sager to go home. It would bo a hard task indeed to describe all the lovely dresses worn en this occasion. Five debutantes made their appearance, all of whom looked particularly charming in their pretty gowns of ■white. Miss K. Scott-Smith wore a lovely charmeuse satin gown trimmed with pearls; Miss E. Goulter (Tiniara), pretty white chiffon taffeta; Miss If. Goulter (Hawkesbury), handsome Empire gown of white charxueuse satin; Miss H. Williamsm (Renwick), pretty soft white silk robe, much tucked; and Miss Pexrett (Benwick), white silk voile relieved with white laoe. On Saturday afternoon last Mrs Newman presided tut the opening function of -the Pioneer Club, which is situated in the top floor of Winder's Buildings, Manners street. Miss Richmond, the president, received the guests. The rooms are not very large, but are pretty and cosy. The room known as the common room is furnished in delicate shades of pink and white, and on this occasion krge bowls of wattle scented the air. Mrs Nswman wore a tailor-made gown of navy blue cloth, much braidsd, and a becoming hat with, roses; Miss Eichmond. dark brown coat and skirt, relieved by a dainty lace front, and she wore a brown straw hat with tips.
