GAMES.
Following is the twelfth game* played between Jose H. Capablanca. (White) and F. J. Marshall (Black) in the recent match between the two at New York: —
Notes by Mr R. J. Barnes. (a) Not in the books, but a- developing move can never go far wrong ; the authorities recommend the simple move Xt x P as giving White a " plus " game. (b) KB i F would also have led to a. lively bout. (c) Why not P x Xt firsrt? The next move no doubt paves the way for a quicker development of the queen's side pieces, but Black losee too many pawns. <D) If Id Q x P at once, then 19 Q-R 3 (eh); 20 K-Kt 1, B-Q B 3; 21 Q-R 6, R-Kt l; 22 P-Q s*, Q-Kt 2; *or 22 Q x P. R-Kt 2; 23 Q-R 8 (eh), KB 2, threatening R x P (eh), winning the Q. Black in any cass should work up a hot attack. (E) B-Q B 3 could be met by P-Q 5, P-Q 6, •tc. ; or R checks, and then P-Q 5. te) A ivasted move, allowing the adver£«
queen to seize a most formidable post in conjunction with the raking position of the two bishops; 22 E-K 3 was much superior. (G) B-B 3 at once is pTefera.ble, preventing White getting X E on open file. There would be nothing extra in the more plausible looking alternative of B-R 6. (h) With such an advantage in pawns, White is justified in offering the exchange, and co getting xid of one of the obnoxious bishops. (i) R-K B 3 looks tempting, but Black •could retort with Q-K 7, practically forcing 8.-B 3, aad then ignoring the threatened R x P (eh), might continue with R x P, keeping up a pressure on the Q B P, etc. (j) This loses a piece. Q-Kt 3 was the only reply, in which case White intended to exchange Q's, and take the remaining pawn. The pawns should win eventually.
