ANTI-CIGARITTE LEAGUE.
Some months ago a society called th« New Zealand Anti-cigarette League waj formed in Dunedin for the purpose- ol inducing boys to abstain from smoking till they are" at least 21. years of age. Al nieMu* tho l«agu^ comprise* *J»out 60 members. Meetings are held on the first Thursday of each month, in the Bath Street Mission Hall, whero the subject of tobaccosmoHn<r is discussed from d.fferent pomte of view. Addresses ire also given by members and visitors, and the a^hermgs sometimes take the form of social evenings, at which recitations and musical selections, etc.. are contributed. , The last meeting of the league was held on Thursday evening, when prizes were awarded by Mr Reed for the best-prepaM speech by' junior and senior members, "I he Advanta** of a Non-smoker over « Smoker " formed the subject of the speec^ byth. senior members, and the prize wa( awarded to L. Bastings. A aomewhat sin»< lar subject was discussed by the jumot membor*. S. Kay« carrying off the- prize. G Pilling, who presides, contributed a humorous reading, and a hearty vote ot thanks was accorded to Mr J. M Indoe for his kindness in presenting pledße-ca.rds to the league. The league hopes that parenta will induce their boys to become members of the league, and thus extend its usefulness.
