CANTERBURY.
John Laing Smith was charged at the Magistrat&'s Court, Timaru, with the thelt of £1 from Aiidre-w Brcr-vrn, farmer, Geraldine. For the prosecution it was alleged -that Brown put £1 on Laghmor for the first race at the Hunt Steeplechase j meeting on. the 29th ult. La.ghm.or won, j and accused denied knowledge of the bet. , The defence was that accused acted as clerk to R. H. Smith, and made no bets ; throughout the day. The ticket produced , by Brown belonged neither to R. H. Smith J nor accused. The magistrate fined accused. , £3 and costs,, and ordered him to pay j Brown back £1, in default one month's imprisonment.
