KOKONGA.
August 9.— Mr Robert Scott, M.P. for the electorate, gave a very interesting and instructive address on the topic, that is engaging tht attention of the British people a.t the present time — " National Defence." The subject was handled in a way that showed Mr Scott had studied the matter in all its aspects. Speaking on our own immediate defence, he emphasised the need there was for the youth of the Dominion to undergo a certain amount of training to fit them to defend our shores. In explaining and advocating the system adopted in Switzerland Mr Scott "said that he considered the training received there was ideal. The address was given ander the auspices of the Debating Society, and about 70 members and friends availed themselves of the opportunity of hearing our member on this popular subject. Ar apology was read trom Lieutenant-colonel Logan, who regretted his absence on military business. At the conclusion of the address several members of the club expressed their opinions, the majority endorsing Mr Scott's views. Refreshments provided by the ladies wen handed round, and a most enjoyable evening was brought to a close by a very hearty vote of thanks to Mr Scott. Concert.— One of the most successful concerts was held in the School on the 30th ult., in aid of the, school funds. A considerable amount of trouble had been taken to ensure a success, and as th© evening was- favourable the schoolhouse was filled with a very appreciative audience, who came from all parts of the district. The ladies and gentlemen who performed on, this occasion seemed to surpass all previous efforts, if the plaudits of the audience was- any indication. Mr K. Williamson occupied the chair. Miss E. Harris opened the concert with a pianoforte, solo. The following ladies 'and gentlemen contributed ' 'terns- : —Misses Beattie, Crawford, Anderson, Harris, Tregonning, Messrs Catherwood, Harris, Swan, Dickison, and Peat. A shadow pantomime, admirably performed by the school children, reflected great credit on their teacher, Mr Swan, for the painstaking instruction. Tho -chairman called' for the customary votes of thanks, which' were heartily responded 1 to, special mention being made of those who had travelled a distance to contribute to the enjoyment of the evening. An ample 'supply of refreshments, provided by the ladies, was dispensed. The singing of " Auld lang syne " was the concluding musical item. The dance which followed was kept up until the small hours of the morning. JVlr Douglas supplied the music. Mrs W. Mann made a very efficient M.C. Medical.— Dr Byers paid his first official visit to Kokonga on the 23th ult. The medical club is very strongly supported here. We realise "what an inestimable boon it is to have a resident medico within a few miles. Those who have had occasion to require his professional services epe ak \ery highly of Dr Byers. Footba.ll.— The Football Club has received fresh impetus by the number of new members. Kyeburn is well represented at the Saturday practices, and tho games are entered into with great vigour. A tea-m from our local club journeyed to Naceby, where a match was played with an Asrociaticn team. Unfortunately our boys were defeated. Thank-, to the kind hospitality of the Na«eby boys, who had catered for their entertainment, their visit was much enjoyed. Recently the Kyeburn Juniors pla\ed a match with tha school boys at Kokonga, the former whining a victory. On thi-, occa-ion Mr= Logan thoughtfully piotidud refreshments..
