It had for it* object to assist financially the funds of thflj newly-formed hockey club. There was M good attendance, and a most enjoyable evejj&S ing was spent in mirth and harmony. TmU prize-winners were: Gentlemen, Me««*l Joseph Payne and Peters; ladies, Missji Steel and George. The dancing was effil ciently controlled by Mr T. A. HanryJ Messrs E. M'Donald and W. Fxaser eupplsg ing the music. Refreshments galore we»n supplied by the ladies. The function cotfi eluded about 1 a.m., all being highly pleaseM with the outing. a Hunting. — The annual meet of ihe Burcti|j wood Hunt Club at Lumsden took place effl Wednesday, 28th ult.. over country Kindly lent by local residents. A goodly numfeeH of local rideis followed the trail, and wittg the exception of one. or two aU were cloWl up at the finish. The master (Mr Com«M and huntsman (Mr Sutherland) gave a goofl exhibition of jumping, both taking everffl obstacle at a good pace, bare barb-witi| included. On the hat being sent round m goodly amount was collected to defray m <*|l dental expenses. || Football.— The annual match TSortnern vj Eastern Districts was played at Riversdal<fl on Wednesday, 28th ult. The game was I very evan contest, the Eastern team gainfl in the verdict by 6 pointato 5. Tlk- annua« match Country v. Town was played at Uor«B last week (Wednesday, 4th). Andrew Small, of this town, died sudden!*] at Athol on Tuesday morning last. Mr P. ; Kinealy spent the previous evening with the deceased, who was in his usual health and quite cheery. As Mr Kinealy did not see smoke or any movement about th< deceased's camp, he went over, and found
dead in bed. At 'the inquest held ?Mr Small's residence a verdict was retned that deceased died of heart failure. funeral took place from Mr Andirew Mdls house, and was attended by a large ncourse of friends and acquaintances of ■_ deceased to the Lumsden Cemetery. £c Rev Mr Marshall, of Balfour, officiated jfcbe house and at the graveside. The late r Small was one of the fast-vanishing gold iping pioneers. H« was upright to a jjree, and anything mean or shady found f place in his character or career. Mr I Small and family have the sincere symphy of all friends and acquaintances in sir cad bereavement. Changes. — Mr E. The two and a-half hours euIfeinment is well worth the money »rged for admission.
