j NEW YORK, August 6. The United States Senate, by 47 to 31, passed the Tariff Bill, as amended by the Conference Committee of the two Houses, a"nd Mr Taft has signed the bill, which came into effect at midnight. Congress then adjourned. August 8. The Transatlantic steamers failed to race into New York in time to enable their cargoes to escape the new tariff. Importers are angry because the Customshouse closed at 5 o'clock, thus causing them a loss of £25,000. LONDON, August 6. I The Daily Mail's New York correspon- ! dent says that there is a consensus of j opinion that the Tariff Bill will ensure the \ victory of the Democrats at the next election. They are now favouring, not Freetrade, but moderate Protection.
