FIRE IN A COLLIERY
LONDON, March 5. The upsetting of candles 6efc fire to the timbering in the Hampstead colliery (Birmingham). -Aine men traversed the flames and escaped, but 21 had to return to the -workings. On recovering, they stated that they had shut the doors and prevented the smoke from reaching their comrades. It is hoped that all the miners are safe. March 6. The repeated heroic efforts to rescue the entombed miners in the Hampstead colliery failed. The position of the men is considered hopeless. Welsby, who was one of the Barnsley rescuers, was provided with a breathing apparatus, and went into the mine, but collapsed and died owing to tli-e oxygen becoming exhausted. ~~*
