DUNEDIN PRESBYTERY.
The regular meoting- of the Dtniediu j Presbjtery was held on the 3rd inift., in [ Ihc hall of Firsi Church. The Moderator (the Rev. H. B. Gray) presided, and ! there was a large attendance of ministers and elders. | , ,MR ]. A. TORRANCE. . „ ... : The Presbytery 'adopted Irho ■ 'followingresolution regarding Sir Torrance, late ■ agent for the Patients and Prisoners' "Aid Society: — "Remembering the work of faith and labour of lo\e carried on with | untiring patience and. zeal in this city b> | Mr Torrance, the Presbytery desires to | express its deepest sympathy with him i now in his se\ere illnoss>7 and. prays the ! God of hope to fill him with all joy and i peace in believing.' THE LATE MRS MILNE.. The following minute was adopted with reference to the death of Mrs Milne, which occurred in Dunedin last week: — " That the Pres>bj'tei - y expresses its unfeigned sorrow at the unexpected death of Mrs Peter Milne and its deeo sympathy with Mr Milne and his family in their great 1056." The Presbytery also expresses its thankfulness to God for Mrs Milne's work of faith and lo\e. During- 39 jeare she had been the faithful companion and complement of her husband in the toil and dangers, the discouragements and spiritual successes during hi*> remarkable missionary work in the New Hebrides Her deep and genial sympathy and her long experience made her the loved and trusted friend and adviser of the wives of the missionaries in the grourj, and her large motherly heart was the refuge of • the native women and children on the mission station, especially in times of sickness and distress. THE REV. DR BOWIE. The Rev. Mr Hewitson. on behalf of the Presbytery, extended a hearty welcome to the Rev. Dr Bowie, medical missionary from the New Hebrides. Dr Bowie's mis- ' sionary work, said the rev. gentleman, ■ was greatly appreciated, whilst as a mcdi- ' cal man his reputation was such that when anyone in the group — natn c, Malay, Englishman, or Frenchman — was ill he made at once for Dr Bowie. Their dis- , tiuguished visitor was a doctor of marked ability, who might have been a leading mart in his profession, but instead he took the station in life and salary of a missionary in the foreign field. Mr Hewitson concluded by moving a resolution, . which was carried with enthusiast ic ap-> plause, expressing pleasure in welcoming Dr Bowie to Dunedin. Dr Bowie returned his thanks for' the cordial welcome extended to him. Referring to the late Mrs Milne, with whom he had been intimately associated in Tni&eionary work on the Hebrides, he said that without a doubt she was the finest woman on the islands. When the news of her death reached the New Hebrides there would be a wail of sorrow from the natives, by whom she was beloved. "They would know they would never have her like again. RESIDENTIAL COLLEGE. On the motion of Dr Nisbef a slight rearrangement suggested in the draft constitution of residential college was referred to the Business Committee to consider in conjunction, and after consultation with Dr Harper, St. Andrew's College, Sydney, and Principal M'Farland, Ormond College, Melbourne. LICENSING STUDENTS. The Rev. Mr Aitken, convener of tke committee appointed to arrange for the ■ licensing of students, reported that ' the ' subjects get would bp. publi&hed "at, the 1 beginning -or me session, and " that examiners had, bee^ appointed. ,"',-, , •
