ROADS IN TARANAKI.
The scarcity of material fof load jna.nteniance in Taranaki has made the work of county councils in that district anything but an easy task. The main south road from New Plymouth running parallel with the coast carries a heavy traffic and the keeping of a in decent repair has been a most difficult problem. The roa-d has bccorac practically worn out, and the County Council has now erected toll gates to assist its finance*. To get material for road metal ; recourse has been had to the boulders on the sea beach. These are conveyed up an almost perpendicular cliff some 200 ft high to the steam stonecrusher, from whence the road metal is conveyed by horse and bullock teams to where jt is required. Two illustrations in another page will crive an idea of the nature of the difficulties to be overcome.
