DUNEDIN CHORAL SOCIETY.

The adjourned annual meeting of the Dunedin Choral Society was held in the Victoria Hall on the * 3rd inst., Mr W. Wilson presiding. The Chairman said that, as they were all aware, it was an adjourned meeting from last week for the purpose of electing office-bearers for the ensuing year. Mr A. E. Bone asked how it woiild be to take an informal show of handb in the matter. If those present were willing to stand by the society, and say they knew of two or three who would assist, it would be a guide as to how they should proceed. The Chairman said he- would be pleased to take a show of hands as to who were going to support the society, and, on a show of hands being taken, added that he 'was glad to see all were willing to support it. Did that mean they were going on and going to appoint office-bearers for the ensuing year?— (Applause). He then called for nominations for the position of president. Mr G. M. Thomson was elected president, on the motion of Mr J. G. Moody, seconded by Mr A. E. Bone, and the following other appointments were made: — Vice-presidents — Messrs A. S. Paterson, H. B. The Panama Canal w;ll be 4-9 miles long, 49ft deep, and 200 ft wide. It will be capable of passinpr the largest ships from ocean to ocean in half a day. The distance between Liverpool and San Francisco will be decreased by 6000 miles. The whole western coast of the Americas will be much more accessible from Europe and Africa, and their eastern coasts much nearer to Asia. It is not too much to s&v that tha opening of this (Treat canal 10 years hence may shift the earth's commercial centre of gravity.
