CAVE (South Canterbury).

Canterbury). March 7.—The weather tcoW a turn on March 1, when rain commenced bo fall. On the 2nd we had a good fall of rain, and, up to the time of writing, 4in hi&ve been registered. If we have some worm weather there is every hope of getting plenty of feed for the winter. The grass* is comirrg away splendidly, especially the cocksfoot. The swede turnips, that looked as if there was no hope for them ever recovering, a<re putting on new leaves, and begin to show life once more. The gTain crops are all harvested, and threshing is in. full swing. In some places where the rusrt was on the wheat it *-s not turning out very well. Sudden Death.—A very sudden death took place at Mr M'lnnes's farm, near the Cave. A farm hand named Forbes, from the Motuikaikai Station, called at Mr M'lnnes's to get the loan of some bags of <ca.ten sheaf chaff. Mr M'lnnes, who was helping to load the dray, saw that Forbes was looking very ill. All at once he fell. Mr M'lnnes at once proceeded to open up the man's clothes, and did everything possible to restore animation. After working for a long time he gave up in despair. The body was taken to the Cave Hotel, and Mr Wray, the S.M., came from Thnaoru, and held an inquest. Dr Burns, who examined the body, pronounced that death was due to heart troubles, so the jury returned a verdict in accordance with the medical evidence. There has been a good deal of comment about the way the corpse was neglected after the inquest. It seemg no one had charge of the body, which waa left, in an open shed until Mr G. Limbrick, to his credit be it said, went on Sunday and covered up the body, and made the surroundings a« pleasant as possible. Land Sales.—Mr H. Elworthy, of Craigmore, has sold 2000 acres of his estate to small farmers, and there are 2000 acres more to sell yet. A School Wanted.—A meeting was held at Cannington Station on March 5 to urge on the Government to give £50 more as a grant to build a school. The Government ha« •offered 1 £150, but the number of children in the district has largely increased. Some of the settlers have recently sold out, and those who took their places have brought from thTee to five children into the district. This has made a great difference in favour of the settlers to get a school. Accident.—A very unfortunate accident happened to Mr Stoker's threshing mill. In shifting the mill it somehow got away from the engine, and went over a precipice, the elevators foremost, the mill being smashed very badly. Stock Sale.—The Cave Saleyards Company held its second sale on the 7th. There was a, good attendance of buyers, some of them having come from a long distance. The yards were well filled, about 500 sheep and lambs being yarded. There was good competition for all th© different sorts. Store lambs sold well, and fat were well competed for. With the exception of two lots all sold well. Xo cattle were offered, but the horses, drays, etc., were -sold under good competition.
