MOLYNEUX HARBOUR BOARD.
At Friday's ' meeting of the Clutha County Council the Chairman mentioned the sub- | iect of the proposed Mblyneux Harbour Board. He was sorry h^ had been unable to attend the deputatipn, that waited on the Hon. J. A. Millar at Kaitangata, but everything seemed- to have been, "cut and dried," and to have gone off very nicely. It was to give two members to Clutha County, two to Bruos, one each to Milton, Kaitangata, and Balclutha boroughs, with <two Government nominees. The •members had to ba elected by the ratepayers. They would notice- that this proposal gave four representative's to Bruce actually, a-nd if the Government nominees resided there it would give a big prepon- • derance on the board to Bruce. Tu&peka was cut out. *The idea- was to merge the Clutha River Board in this Harbour Board. He did not at all fall in with the proposal. There was^ feeling that the River Board ■'should not be merged in the Harbour Board, but should be left to carry out its functions". 6f keeping the navigation open into the' interior. There was a danger that the River Board's endowments might be used for. raising a large loan, which would tie those endowments up for all time. It wag a matter which the council should consider carefully, and give an expression of opinion. >No doubt it would be very nice for the Kaitangata people to have the spending of the River Board funds, but he (the speaker) had the interests of the settlers up river to consider. Mr Clarke hazarded the opinion that " Moeley was at the bottom of it." Mr Hay said that if they wanted a harbour they should blow away the bar at the old Maori graveyard, where they would havo s. cafe shelter. Mr Clarke moved that this council considers the matter at next meeting. — Seconded by Mr Nicbl, and carried.
